I would describe my work as ‘staged documentary’, captured using natural light. I create a dialogue with the people I take photos of; they give me the space to understand them and that freedom allows me to capture their reality in atmospheric images. Rather than revealing their problems, it is more important to me to create a mood in my images. That way, people are able to empathise with the subjects I tackle in my photographs.
I do not want to judge, but try to learn and understand. By balancing involvement and distance in my work, I aim to make difficult subjects more visible.
